Logbook notes

The Phat Buoys’ first Great Lake — vast, empty, horizon to horizon.

Good luck from the Ojibwa smudging depot us safe, when, with no land in sight, we sailed by compass and cloud until fog rolled in and we spun two concerning 360s to confirm our course.

Picnics and campfires ashore, and the first ever Phat Fishing Derby — won by Warboy with a 10cm sprat, still celebrated as a victory of optimism over scale.

The most perfect sailing came with a long series of short tacks up the length a fjord to a silent anchorage known simply as The Pool.

Pre and post sail excitement included visiting Redpine campsite, a popular woodland summer activity place for all the Scriven’s kids years ago, and a couple of nights in log cabin bliss in Algonquin Park with Phat Buoy friend, Mark Keiffer.
