Logbook notes
Lisbon’s light, Fado’s sorrow and a chef to remember.
We traced Portugal’s rugged west coast, falling for the culture, cuisine, and rhythm of the Atlantic. Three days pinned in at Setubal by persistent winds gave us time ashore — and for Simon, a cinematic romance with a non-English-speaking chef who stole his heart and vanished into legend just as quickly.
Beautiful anchorages, good food, and weather that tested patience more than skill. And a worryingly poor dinghy to service our frequent journeys ashore.
By the time we reached Lisbon, bumping into hoards of hawkers selling what we heard as ‘self esteem’, every Phat Buoy had learned at least one line of Fado — and the true meaning of saudade. The melancholic and profoundly nostalgic longing for the beloved but absent long sailing adventures.
